Winding our way across the USA by train I had plenty of time on my hands in the last few days, and as we were heading to Chicago, my wife and I settled down one night as we rumbled along through snowy North Dakota to watch Cameron Crowe’s forgotten classic Say Anything. In it, against the odds, nerdy John Cusack gets the girl, and at the moment everything is falling into place with Cusack and his squeeze about to jet off to commence a new life together, his new love turns to him in a moment of clarity:

“Diane Court: Nobody really thinks it will work, do they?
Lloyd Dobler: No. You just described every great success story.”

Food for thought perhaps, for all us fluxers?
